Lighthouses have been a part of world-wide coastlines for hundreds of years if you include those poor chaps standing in the frigid weather holding up candles in an effort to help navigate passing ships. Today's lighthouses, although more technologically advanced, are still the same basic principle. Keep that poor captain from wrecking his ship on a reef or jetty.
